Most artists are ecstatic when they win just one Grammy-Billie Eilish just won five, including four in the main categories. 

Billie Eilish, an 18 year old from LA, released her debut album in March of last year. At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards she won Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Pop Vocal Album. She is the first woman and the youngest artist to win the four major Grammy categories. Some critics question as to whether she is truly worthy of all these Grammys, her fans would beg to differ.  

“I do believe that she deserved to win,” said senior Riley Johnson. “I think she’s worked really hard over the past couple years, and even though all of the artists that were nominated are really great singers and artists. I believe she put in the most time and effort,” Johnson added.

Eilish was more than humble. “Please don’t be me,” she mouthed before it was announced that she won her fifth Grammy. 

Eilish expressed her love for Ariana Grande in her acceptance speech for Album of the Year: “Can I just say, I think Ariana deserves this,” she said. 

“I think as an upcoming artist a lot of press has been around her, and she also believes that other people deserved to win. So having her win all five, a lot of people believe that she didn’t deserve to win them all and so she wanted to share the win with everyone,” said Johnson. 

Eilish’s fans are excited about the awards. She has created anthem after anthem for Gen Z, and they’re finally starting to feel represented and heard. 

Johnson says Eilish is an inspiration. “I love the way that her music is so different from everyone else’s and I think she can connect to Gen Z in a different way. I actually wrote my research paper on her last year for English, so I delved a lot into her messages and the way that she integrates how Gen Z feels about the world,” she said. 

“There’s a lot more depression and anxiety in our lives and I feel like she integrates that nicely into all of her songs,” she added. 

Even other huge artists who are legends in their own right are fans of Billie Eilish, such as Elton John. “She’s come a long way very quickly. She’s an incredible word-of-mouth artist. I can’t wait to see her live because she has something very special going on. Talent like hers doesn’t come along very often,” said Elton John in an interview with Pigeons & Planes. 

Eilish has clearly had a very eventful couple of years, and with the perseverance that she has displayed recently, through releasing new music and creating entertaining music videos, it seems as though she has a very long career ahead of her.
