Hollywood has long since struggled with representing members of the LGBTQ+ community, but Call Me By Your Name is a movie that actually does the LGBTQ+ community justice.

Call Me By Your Name is a 2017 Oscar winning film directed by Luca Guadagnino. The basic premise is that Elio lives with his family in Italy, and his father’s intern, Oliver, comes and stays with them for the summer. Eventually Elio and Oliver fall in love and begin a relationship even though Oliver will have to return to the United States soon.

This movie has garnered quite the cult following over the years due to its beautiful setting in Crema, Italy, as well as its heartbreaking love story and its depiction of a healthy gay relationship. So it’s no surprise that when Guadagnino confirmed that a sequel was happening with all of the original cast, many people got extremely excited and even emotional about it.

Unfortunately there is no way of knowing when the production of the movie will begin or when the movie will be released because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Luca Guadagnino is from Italy, so he is currently on lockdown as well. Before this pandemic struck, the director was supposed to meet with a writer for help with the movie, but of course, because of recent circumstances that meeting was not possible.

“I was going to America to meet a writer I love very much, whose name I don’t want to mention, to talk about the second part,” said Guadagnino. “Unfortunately, everything is canceled,” Guadagnino added.

But, if you want to focus on the bright side, fans were ecstatic to find out that the entire cast of the original movie will be returning for the anticipated upcoming sequel.

“Of course, it’s a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stulhbarg, Esther Garrel, and the other actors. They will all be there in the new film,” said Guadagnino.

Not only did Call Me By Your Name win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, it was also nominated for Best Picture. Rising star Timothée Chalamet was nominated for Best Actor for his role as Elio Perlman. Chalamet didn’t end up winning the Oscar but it is still an impressive feat for the actor, especially considering that he is the youngest person in eighty years to be nominated for Best Actor. As if that isn’t impressive enough, he was in the same category as huge names in Hollywood. Actors like Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Kaluuya, Denzel Washington, with Gary Oldman winning.

“This is crazy to be here,” said Chalamet while talking to ABC’s Michael Strahan on the Oscars red carpet. “I have nothing to add! It’s just insane. Talking to Michael Strahan; my mom’s here. So, very happy to be here,” Chalamet added.

This sequel is definitely something to look forward to, and when it does finally end up being released into theaters, one can only dream that it will live up to the magnificence of the original.
