The Dustin Strong 5K, an event held at SHS this October raised funds from students and parents to support SHS’s senior Dustin Liang in his battle against leukemia.
More than just the SHS students and staff came together for Dustin—Sharon residents and non-residents, including SHS graduate and state representative Ted Phillips, also came to support the event. SHS teacher Lisa Joliceour, who participated in the event, praised its organization and the balance of participants.“The involvement of both students and community members suggested effective communication, and was essential to the success of any community event,” she said.
CP Pototsky, a senior at SHS, said that the event’s fundraising was successful. “As of 11/14/2023, a remarkable $1,836.83 had been raised—more than three times the original goal,” she said.
Elle Gordon, who hadn’t planned on participating, said that the community’s kindness encouraged her. “I found joy at finding that everyone was welcoming and kind, despite being behind throughout the event,” Gordon furthers, “I appreciated the cheers from volunteers and the opportunity to connect with Dustin’s and other families,” said Gordon.
Dustin Liang expressed gratitude despite facing another round of chemotherapy. “The event went beyond being a gathering—it was a manifestation of friendship and encouragement,” he said.
