Student Question: Which came first: the chicken, or the egg?????
Abby’s Answer: The eagle, obviously.
Q: Dear Abby, what should I do if I don’t have anyone to sit with on my lunch shift?
A: With the mixed-grade SHS lunch schedule, most students find themselves in this situation at least once a cycle. There are two things you can do about it:
Go solo. No, it’s not “weird” to eat lunch alone, it’s called “me time.” There are lots of places in the cafeteria where an individual student can sit (especially outside, if the weather’s nice). Use the 22 minutes of free time to read, listen to a podcast, or catch up on the work for your next class. Of course, you should make sure you eat something as well. And in the future, maybe get your math homework done before school… But the point stands.
Join a new table. If you’re feeling social, chances are that someone in this lunch would be happy to sit with you. Look around for acquaintances or friendly people from your grade. Find an empty seat at their table and ask, “Can I sit here?” It may feel awkward at first, so try breaking the ice with one of these tried-and-true conversation starters:
“Wow, this pizza/nacho burger/pasta salad is really terrible/great/interesting.”
“Have you guys seen the latest Talon article? The tea is insane.”
“You will NOT believe what just happened in One Amazing Thing/The Canterbury Tales/The Great Gatsby/Frankenstein.”
Q: There is a girl who sits behind me in a class I have. We are OK friends. How could I get her to notice me?
A: In my extensive personal experience, the best thing to do is make small gestures to let her know you notice her. You could pass little notes in class (teachers, I didn’t say that), compliment her, or just make sure to say hello every time you see her. If she wants to get closer to you, it will happen naturally.
