At one of Sharon’s most historic locations, the gorgeous sunsets, peaceful waters, and surrounding natural landscape create a perfectly tranquil setting. This beloved landmark is none other than the majestic Lake Massapoag.
Sharon’s 392-acre natural lake is a popular destination in the summer months and one of the town’s most valuable natural resources. It has a resident beach, lifeguards, a bathhouse, docks, swim lessons, a bandstand, picnic tables, parking, and more. And in addition to offering enjoyment for residents today, Lake Massapoag continues to preserve its rich past.

Before the arrival of British settlers in 1637, Native Americans fished and hunted in the lake for hundreds of years. Later, in the eighteenth century, workers deepened the lake’s outlet to extract bog iron for smelting. The lake was also home to a large ice business, with a huge wooden icehouse at the lake’s eastern end.

A long-time resident of Sharon, asked about their fondest memories at Lake Massapoag, remembered that when they were a young child, winters were so cold that the lake would freeze solidly enough to skate on it. “I remember when I was a kid, over forty years ago, I would skate on the lake because it froze over very well,” the resident said.

Another visitor to the lake expressed their appreciation for the lake’s vivid sunsets, which they watch whenever they get a chance: “On certain days, when I saw a stunning sunset in sight, I would get in my car and go to the lake in the hopes of seeing it in time. Lake Massapoag sunsets provide a continual reminder of the beauty of Mother Nature.”
Since the town’s establishment, Lake Massapoag has been an essential resource for the community, providing a place for social gatherings and supplying the town’s water. Visiting the lake, surrounded by open skies and beautiful foliage, is often a freeing experience; beachgoers can relax by sitting peacefully by the water or walking along the scenic paths. Lake Massapoag’s calm waters welcome everyone in the Sharon community to discover its history and enjoy its modern attractions.
