A new Costco is set to open in Sharon on March 12, and residents of the town are excited. The 150,000-square-foot store on Old Post Road will feature the traditional gas station, bakery, and food court, saving residents the drive to nearby locations in Dedham or Avon. It is expected to attract customers across the region while creating new jobs and boosting the local economy.
Sharon High School students are particularly interested in the wholesale giant’s arrival, both for its products and its potential job opportunities. Some, though, have conflicting feelings about the store. As senior Benjamin Wulf said, “It will probably take some business away from small businesses, but overall, I think it will be good for the town.”
Beyond its retail appeal, the new Costco is expected to generate hundreds of jobs in the Sharon community, ranging from entry-level positions to management roles. The boost to the town’s economy is especially good news because the job opportunities will be open to both high school students and adults in search of stable work. Costco has been recognized for its competitive wages and benefits, making it an appealing option for young job seekers.
Senior Samarth Bedre, a self-proclaimed Costco fan, is excited about more than just the job openings. For Bedre, the best part of the new store is the wholesale deals. “My family loves buying in bulk, and I’m really looking forward to having the store so close. And honestly, I just love the free samples!” he said.
However, the store’s opening also has provoked concerns. Sammy O’Reilly and Soham Kulkarni, two students who live close to Costco, are worried about increased traffic in the area, particularly during rush hour, because “they’re already busy as is.”
Traffic flow improvements, including the installment of new traffic lights and expansion of turn lanes near the entrance, are underway.
As the opening date approaches, Sharon residents and high school students alike are gearing up for the arrival of the town’s newest retail hub. From its legendary rotisserie chicken to its job opportunities, Costco promises to bring more than just bulk goods to Sharon: it’s set to bring in much-needed tax revenue and become a cornerstone of the community.
