When students think back to their favorite teachers at Sharon High School, Ms. Cioffi often tops the list. Known for her engaging teaching style and unwavering support, she has left a lasting impression on many students. Now, after a brief retirement, she has returned to the classroom as Ms. Dibble’s long-term substitute for the 2024-2025 school year. Her return has been met with excitement and curiosity as students wonder what she’s been up to during her time away from SHS.
In an interview, Ms. Cioffi shared memories of her adventures during her time away. “I traveled a bit with my husband and some friends,” she said, her face lighting up as she recalled her journeys. “We went to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, and Ireland. It was great to see everything, and mostly, we hiked and biked. The best part was getting out there and seeing the countryside.” She also spent time hiking in New Mexico’s stunning landscapes, which she described as a transformative experience. After her many years of service at SHS, she was excited to finally see the world.
Back at home, Ms. Cioffi stayed busy with projects for family and friends. “I helped with landscaping, tree cutting, painting, tiling—things people never get around to doing,” she said with a smile. “I’ve been doing those kinds of projects since I was ten.” At first, she had considered working on a farm, but Ms. Cioffi eventually opted to lend her skills to loved ones, finding joy in helping them with difficult tasks.
Her love for teaching, though, ultimately pulled her back to SHS. “Two things brought me back,” Ms. Cioffi said: “the math department, which is just a fantastic group of people, and my students. When you interact with students, you’re always learning something back from them. It’s really fun to be around young people who are still energized about learning… That energy is contagious.”
However, returning to Sharon High School’s new building has been an adjustment. “It’s pretty and clean,” she said, but admitted it feels more isolating than the old building. “The old building was more lived-in. It felt more like home,” she reminisced. Ms. Cioffi had a personal connection to the old red brick building, as she attended four years of school there herself.
Ms. Cioffi’s return is a chance for her to rekindle her love of teaching and support the next generation of SHS students. As she stands before her classes each day, she offers a wealth of knowledge and a contagious enthusiasm for learning and life—a gift to all who have the privilege to be her students.
