Legendary American actress, Betty White, passed away from a stroke on December 31, 2021, just weeks before her one-hundreth birthday.
White is known for her many roles in TV shows and movies, such as The Golden Girls, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Hot in Cleveland, and The Proposal. She stands as the actress with the longest career on television. In her lifetime, White was nominated for 21 primetime Emmy awards and has also won a Grammy award.
Jeff Witjas, Betty White’s agent, said in a statement to PEOPLE Magezine that he thought White was going to live forever. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again,” said Witjas.
Sharon High English teacher, Mrs. Lisa Jolicoeur, says that she watched her in many shows such as The Golden Girls, and the game show, Password. “People admire celebrities for many reasons, but when I think of Betty White, I think of integrity, selflessness, and kindness; she possessed a humble nature that evoked smiles and put others at ease,” said Jolicoeur.
“Betty White was an amazing role model for all the positive qualities we admire in humans,” added Jolicoeur.
Interim Assitant Superintendent, Dr. Meg Dussault, says that Betty White was a staple in so many people’s lives because they grew up watching her. “My grandparents, my parents, my peers, and my children all knew who Betty White was and could say they saw her in something. There are not that many performers who are recognized and admired by over four generations of television viewers,” said Dussault.
Senior Emma Botelho says that she is saddened that Betty White passed away, especially before celebrating her one-hundredth birthday. “I don’t know her from a specific place, but growing up my family would talk about her all the time, whether it was her character in The Golden Girls or societal barriers she would overcome due to her activism,” said Botelho.
“I think she was so well known not only for her acting and character presence, but her essence of being an all-around great person,” added Botelho.
Dussault says she watched Betty White in shows with both her grandparents and dad. “I could not believe how different her characters were on the two shows [Mary Tyler More and The Golden Girls] and I remember having the conscious thought that she was a comic genius,” said Dussault.
Jolicoeur says Betty White also served as an advocate for animal welfare. “Most notably, Betty White was an important advocate for animal welfare and drew attention to humane treatment for animals; many celebrities have causes, but she appears to have truly embraced this role,” said Jolicoeur.
“I think that there are few people in our lifetime that will match the work output and compassion of Betty White. Her impact will be long felt and I am very glad I was able to enjoy her work as long as I did,” added Dussault.
