While Thanksgiving is still a few days away, some Sharonites have already begun celebrating what they are grateful for.
On Sunday, Nov. 23, Sharon’s Rotary Club recognized the community with a shared meal. Over the weekend, the group hosted their annual Thanksgiving luncheon for senior citizens. The event, which is a long-time town tradition, has been running for over 50 years; the first luncheon of this kind was held in 1972 and was put together by Rotary Club member Bernie Kafka. Today, member Jane Desberg has taken on the role of running this event.
Desberg says the luncheon is a great way to make sure no member of the community is left behind during the holidays.
“The event [was started] to make sure every senior citizen had a way to celebrate Thanksgiving,” said Desberg.
In addition, the luncheon also involved student volunteers, adding to the cross-community vibes of the event. Together, attendees enjoyed traditional Thanksgiving treats like mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and of course, turkey and apple pie.
One of her favorite things about the luncheon, Desberg said, is “the festive environment and attendees enjoying the food and seniors enjoying each other’s company.”
